Your feedback is requested on our draft Colorectal Cancer Screening Report and Recommendations, Oncology Care Report and Recommendations, and Reproductive and Sexual Health Report and Recommendations. For all of these, we have created an online survey for your public comments that we estimate will take 10-15 minutes to complete. Comments must be received by 5pm Friday, October 23^rd.

Colorectal cancer is common, being the fourth most diagnosed cancer in the United States but the second leading cause of cancer deaths. Survival rates vary by stage at diagnosis and vary by race. Colorectal cancer screening decreases both the incidence of and mortality from colorectal cancer due to finding cancer in earlier stages and facilitates the removal of precancerous lesions but is not done for all who would benefit. The workgroup’s goal is to increase appropriate colorectal cancer screening in Washington State to decrease incidence of and mortality from colorectal cancer.

Cancer is common, with almost 40% of people diagnosed in their lifetime. Chemotherapy and radiation to treat cancer can cause a wide variety of side effects from hair loss to pain, nausea, and a decrease in white blood cells leading to infections.  While the majority of oncology care is planned and provided through out- or in-patient services, patients also frequently seek treatment for urgent and emergent issues, often from side effects of treatment through emergency departments, indicating an opportunity for better symptom management throughout the disease course.  The workgroup’s goal is to reduce potentially avoidable emergency department visits and therefore improve patient experience and care outcomes for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Reproductive and sexual health services are broad and include screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections; screening and treatment for conditions of the genital organs including cancer as well as conditions that can impact quality of life such as fibroids and endometriosis; and family planning including contraception, infertility treatment, pre-conception care, prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care. These recommendations aim to improve quality, equity, and cultural appropriateness of reproductive and sexual healthcare services across the lifespan in Washington State. The workgroup has expanded on the populations identified in Senate Bill 5602 (2019) to focus on improvement of clinical services for those who are Black, indigenous, people of color, immigrants or refugees, have experienced violence including human trafficking, people with disabilities, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and/or Questioning or Queer (LGBTQ+).
